History

The original company was started prior to 1922, and was known as Madison Dairy Supply Company. It was located in downtown Madison at 114 N Bedford Street. Ernie Miller operated the business for many years prior to selling it to Albert Negus Jr. (Al).

When Al bought the business it was focused on supplying the needs of dairy farms in the area. Part of the needs of dairy farms was packaging, such as butter wrappers. He expanded the line of packaging to other items.

His brother Fred Negus, a former UW Badger Football player and WWII veteran, worked for a different packaging company in Madison. That company was selling off some of its box making machinery, and Fred encouraged Al to buy it, which he did. Al started making corrugated boxes to fill the needs of many businesses.

In the 1960’s, the Mead company and Al perceived a market for corrugated ice cream bulk boxes. Mead designed and tested various configurations, and finalized a number of box styles, which they and Al patented, and which continue to this day.

After Al passed, his heirs sold Madison Dairy Supply and Negus Container & Package to Phoenix Industries in 1988. Rod Shaughnessy and his team expanded product offerings to include industrial supplies, chemicals, and a wider selection of boxes and packaging materials.

Negus Packaging Solutions, also referred to as Negus Container & Packaging, or just “Negus” operates today as a local supplier of packaging boxes and packaging supplies to the Madison community. Our Ice cream containers; the Squarepak and the Octapak remain a large part of the business and are shipped all across the United States as an economical and environmentally friendly biodegradable alternative to plastic for your Ice Cream, Sherbet, Frozen Yogurt, & Frozen Custard storage.
